Centering Trans Joy in the Church

About Drag Communion

At 2024’s Drag and Spirituality Summit, held in Toronto Ontario, I heard time after time from queer artists and performers about their efforts to work with the church to plan, approve, and host queer-centered worship. And time and again, their success stories ended with “And then they reluctantly agreed that I could do something with drag if we held it on a Thursday night and didn’t promote it too much.”

What would it look like for the church to center queer people in their most sacred rituals?

We set out to answer that question at Shaughnessy Heights United Church, in Vancouver Canada. It took us eighteen months of planning, education, and advocacy, which culminated in a Sunday morning worship service that filled the sanctuary with queer community, celebrating our joy, our struggles, and our sacredness through song, dance, readings, and the feast.

If church were like this all the time, I would come every week!

You can also get involved on the SQUID Discord, an ecumenical project centering queer spirituality, at this link. It’s a great place to find more resources, ask questions, and get support for your own efforts.

Again at Shaughnessy Heights United Church, this Drag Communion will be the official Sunday service of the 2025 Drag and Spirituality Summit, where we’ll be thrilled to host drag performers from around the world for this special event.

Resources to Host Your Own Drag Communion

Want to host your own Drag Communion? I’ve prepared a PDF of the liturgy, which includes a guide to best practices, recommendations, and resources. You can download it right here.

I’m also providing a free download, with a free license to perform in worship settings, of my St. Brigid Bride Blessing.

Hosting an event like this comes with a LOT of work beforehand. Conversation, listening, education, and patience are critical so that everyone can either get on board or at least choose not to stand in the way.

I’m hopeful that sharing these sources and our success story will make it easier for more faith communities to work with queer leaders to bring events like this to more places. To help facilitate those discussions, I’m also providing a PDF excerpt from the 2024 annual report.
